Pilates originated by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s as form of exercise or solution to correcting muscular imbalances and improving posture, core stability, and balancing muscular strength with flexibility, as well as increasing breathing capacity and organ function. Although modern day exercise physiology has since evolved and been applied to Pilates, these core principals remain.
Here at Body In Motion, we are the largest group Pilates provider in the greater Tauranga region, with over 50 classes running weekly across three different studio locations – Pyes Pa, Mount Maunganui and Bethlehem.
Fundamentally, we teach Pilates on a 1:1 level and allow clients to master a true understanding of incorporating the Pilates principals into their movements before progressing into a group class scenario. These principals allow clients to move with better precision and control, while their motor control skills or body awareness greatly improve – thus becoming, a neuromuscular strength training program.

We offer a wide range of class options across our three studio locations in Mount Maunganui, Bethlehem and Pyes Pa, ranging from Mat classes with integrated use of different small props to Reformer classes, or a mix of both. We have entry level classes for those still rehabilitating from an old injury or chronic pain, to more intermediate / advanced classes where clients are ready to experience the full benefits of a Pilates workout. Specifically for kids, we offer classes that introduce them to the world of Pilates with the mission of developing mind-body awareness at a young age. The goal is to teach them about the importance of posture and teach basic exercises that promote proper alignment and healthy joints, while building core muscle strength, stability and coordination. Run through the school holidays and periodic block times throughout the year, kids get to enjoy a thorough understanding of good movement practices to compliment their other seasonal interests.
Catering to the vast elderly population in our community, we have several Senior Pilates classes each week that restore youth, by placing focus on restoring mobility and then strength to all joints, and gaining stability through improving core strength.
Runners, Swimmers, Cyclists – Triathletes! For those active members around our region, our early wake up Runners class, taught through a high intensity reformer workout, targets improving strength and restoring balance to joints while building muscular strength to your global mobilisers… (the powerful ones that get you off the start line!). Improve technique, lengthen your stride and allow Pilates to compliment your athletic conditioning.
Lastly, for those beautiful Mothers to be, we offer weekly Antenatal classes to support Mum’s body in preparation for birth. We make sure our clients retain their strength, muscle tone & stability to all joints as so many postural changes occur during pregnancy.
